Saint Hildegund of Schönau: Disguised Faith, Revealed Truth
Gospel:
"For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing concealed that will not be made known."
— Luke 12:2
Biography
Born around 1170 near Cologne, Hildegund accompanied her father on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land — disguised as a boy, for her own safety. After her father's death, she continued to live under the name Brother Joseph. Upon returning to Germany, she entered the Cistercian monastery of Schönau as a novice. There, she led a life marked by humility and deep devotion — until her death in 1188. Only then was her true identity discovered. Her story, shaped by courage and faith, is commemorated locally on April 20.

Prayer
Almighty Lord,
You who know the heart beyond all appearances,
Grant us the strength to follow Your path,
Even when circumstances force us to hide our truth.
Following the example of Saint Hildegund,
May our faith remain unwavering,
And our lives bear witness to Your infinite love.
Amen.
